Marcus

(second century)
   Heretic and Sect Founder.
Marcus was a follower of valentinus. According to Irenaeus, he used magic to deceive gullible women and he taught that by calculating the numerical value of God’s names, all sorts of esoteric wisdom could be found. His followers formed an independent sect in the Rhone valley. They had their own forms of baptism and regarded the Gospel of Thomas as canonical. The group survived into the fourth century.
